...if you like history. I happened upon it by accident, and I learned that Abraham Lincoln’s son was in fact an extraordinary person.

Thank you for the tip. What are your thoughts on the current state of Kavanaugh affairs? Looks like 45 is rampaging against the accuser...

I was thinking he could haver been played convincingly by Donald Sutherland in the movie adaption of his life.

He was definitely a better looking fellow than his dad.  He aged well.

Very interesting. I would quibble with the presenter’s closing. Yes, RTL was proximate to power throughout his life. Yes, he was a successful business man. But what did he do to change anything? What contributions did he make to the American experience? I think he is largely forgotten because the answer to that questions is, “Not much.”

Our family has managed to do just about every “Lincoln” thing possible. We visited his birthplace with the fake cottage where he was born, we visited his home in Springfield, we went to Ford’s Theater (completely rebuilt since the Civil War, as it collapsed back in the day), we visited the house across the street where he died, we visited his grave, also in Springfield, and we have been to the Lincoln Memorial. I think I’m Lincoln’d out.

My interest in talking about a president is usually proportional to how distant they are in History’s rear view mirror.

However in partial answer , read this:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2018/09/21/kavanaughs-accuser-might-be-better-off-with-criminal-trial-so-might-kavanaugh/?utm_term=.66979ab560a9

If a person is accused of a crime, whether it be recent or in the distant past, I believe they should be granted the presumption of innocence unless proven otherwise. If charges are brought against this person on this issue, then I am interested. If not, then I consider it nothing more than part of the political circus and am not interested.

Therefore, in spite of the fact that I consider our President the most obnoxious, abusive example ever of why Twitter should be abolished so that we don’t have to be subjected to the rantings of every tom, dick, and harry with a cell phone, I consider his recent statement calling for evidence  of the assault to be brought forth somewhat reasonable.  Of course, he says that because he knows there likely is none, but it opens an obvious window for actual charges to be brought (even at this late date) if the proper jurisdiction is willing.

I think an in depth answer to the question of what did he do to change anything would take more than 7:26, and is likely worth looking into for anyone so inclined. He was evidently in a position to influence public policy and economics on many levels throughout his life. Whether or not he is known to have influenced anything on a significant level may largely be a function of what history records.

That’s an interesting take. What has astonished me these past 18 months or so is how one man has brought into vogue being a flaming asshole. Made household names of porn stars. And so-called Christians hitching their wagons to the most un-Christlike man I can imagine. And sexist and racist and, basically, brute. That entire “tact is a lie” thing. I feel badly for the accuser because once someone is sexually assaulted, they are a loser, no matter the outcome. It’s lose/lose/lose. Our vaunted government institutions have descended into crassly, nakedly broken political chaos . The one winner in recent news I perceive is Iran, who said “screw you” to the Americans about entering into new talks. This man is anathema to me and he is followed by a passel of brainless automaton zealots. Personally, I’d like a chance to vote for Jeff Flake for president.
